Questions & Answers

What are your positions on development, and what initiatives would you propose for revitalizing our Main Street business district?

The safety and aesthetics of our township’s business district, specifically Main Street, have been an ongoing concern. We see great opportunities for success in revitalizing downtown New Egypt, and steps are already being taken in that direction.

First, the 2025 Plumsted Township Committee has hired additional code enforcement staff to address the inconsistency of past enforcement. Second, the 2025 township committee has created the Economic and Business Development Commission to make recommendations on enhancing the business environment. We are also seeking to work with the state to bring grant and business growth training to Plumsted Township.

As candidates, we strongly support tax incentives to business owners to upgrade their Main Street properties. We support smart growth* and are champions of preservation. While we will always back the land owner’s right to sell, if elected, we will launch the Plumsted Preservation Project. That project will ensure every owner of farmland and open space in the township has the information needed to make an educated decision about land preservation and an understanding of the steps in the preservation process.

*Smart growth (aka, smart development) refers to reasonable, carefully considered opportunities for beneficial growth that are in alignment with the township’s Master Plan and take preservation measures into account. Smart growth allows for some development in appropriate locations with intentional efforts to maintain the rural character and culture of our township. Smart growth in our downtown will be with the goal of creating a vibrant business district.
